A roof insurance claim in Florida follows a predictable order. Knowing the steps keeps the process moving and keeps you from paying for things the policy should cover.
Step 1: Free inspection, before you call the carrier
Have a roofer inspect first. If the damage is not claim-worthy, you avoid an unnecessary claim on your record. If it is, you file with photos and a written report already in hand.
Step 2: Emergency mitigation
Tarping and leak control right away. Policies expect you to prevent further damage and generally cover reasonable mitigation. Keep the invoice.
Step 3: File the claim
Report the date of loss, cause (wind, hail, fallen tree) and attach the inspection report. Florida law sets deadlines for reporting; sooner is safer.
Step 4: Adjuster visit
The carrier sends an adjuster. Sunny Roofing’s project manager can walk the roof with them so nothing is missed. Expect this within a couple of weeks of filing, longer after a major storm.
Step 5: Estimate and scope
The carrier issues a scope and estimate. Compare it line by line with the roofer’s estimate. Differences in decking, underlayment, code upgrades and permit fees are the usual gaps.
Step 6: Approval, then work
Sunny Roofing starts once the claim is approved and the scope agreed, so the homeowner is never carrying an unapproved balance.
Step 7: Completion and final payment
Many policies hold back depreciation until the work is finished. The completion certificate and final invoice release it.
Where claims stall
- Missing photos from before mitigation.
- No written inspection report.
- Scope disputes over code-required upgrades.
- Delayed adjuster scheduling after regional storms.
Sunny Roofing handles documentation and adjuster coordination as part of every storm job. See roof insurance claim assistance.
