Roofing in Florida requires a state license. Unlicensed roofing is a crime, and it leaves you with no permit, no inspection, no warranty and no recourse. Checking a license takes two minutes.
Step 1: Get the License Number
Ask for it. A licensed roofer has it on the truck, the business card, the website and the contract. Florida roofing licenses begin with CCC (Certified, valid statewide) or RC (Registered, valid in specific counties). Sunny Roofing’s is CCC1333142; it is in the footer of every page on this site.
Step 2: Look It Up on the DBPR Site
- Go to the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation license search at myfloridalicense.com.
- Choose search by license number and enter it, or search by name.
- Open the record.
Step 3: Read the Record
- Status. Must say Current, Active. Anything else, including Inactive, Delinquent or Null and Void, means the contractor cannot pull permits.
- License type. Certified Roofing Contractor or Registered Roofing Contractor. A general contractor license does not by itself allow roofing as a trade in Florida without the roofing license or a licensed roofing subcontractor.
- Primary qualifier. The person whose exam and experience back the license. The company name on your contract should match the business on the record or a listed DBA.
- Expiration. Should be in the future.
- Discipline. The record shows complaints and disciplinary actions. Read them.
Step 4: Ask for Insurance
Two certificates: general liability and workers’ compensation. Ask for the certificate to be sent from the insurance agent directly, which confirms it is current. Without workers’ comp, an injured worker on your roof can become your claim.
Step 5: Confirm the Permit Is in Their Name
After signing, the permit should be applied for by the contractor under their license. If a roofer asks you to pull an owner-builder permit, they are avoiding inspection of their own work and shifting liability to you. Walk away.
Other Checks Worth Two Minutes
- Better Business Bureau profile and rating
- Google reviews, read for patterns rather than the score
- Manufacturer certifications such as GAF Certified or CertainTeed Select ShingleMaster, which require the manufacturer to verify licensing and insurance
- Physical office address you can visit

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between CCC and RC licenses?
CCC is a Certified Roofing Contractor license, valid in every Florida county. RC is Registered, valid only in the counties where the contractor registered.
Can a handyman repair my roof in Florida?
Roofing work requires a roofing license in Florida regardless of the size of the job. Minor exemptions are narrow; when in doubt, use a licensed roofer.
The license is active but under a different company name. Is that a problem?
It can be. The company on your contract should match the DBPR record or a listed DBA. Ask for an explanation and verify it.
