How Many Bundles of Shingles Does a Roof Need?

September 29, 2026 · Sunny Roofing

Roofing has its own units, and knowing them lets you read an estimate instead of trusting it. Here is the math, from roof area to bundle count.

The Square

One roofing square is 100 square feet of roof surface. Roofers price and order by the square. The surface area is larger than the home’s footprint because of pitch and overhangs; a satellite measurement or a field measurement gives the true number.

Bundles Per Square

Shingles ship in bundles, and the number of bundles that cover one square depends on the product. Three-tab shingles are commonly three bundles per square. Architectural (laminated) shingles are commonly three bundles per square as well, with some heavier premium lines at four or more. The bundle count per square is printed on the wrapper and on the manufacturer’s data sheet.

Waste Factor

Every roof wastes shingles at rakes, hips, valleys and around penetrations. A simple gable roof might waste around 10 percent; a complex hip roof with many valleys can run 15 percent or higher. Estimates add the waste factor to the measured squares before converting to bundles.

The Accessories Estimates Forget

  • Starter strip. A dedicated starter course along eaves and rakes, ordered separately by linear foot.
  • Hip and ridge cap. Purpose-made cap shingles by linear foot of hip and ridge.
  • Underlayment. Synthetic underlayment by the roll, plus self-adhered membrane at valleys, eaves and penetrations as Florida code requires.
  • Drip edge and flashing. By linear foot.
  • Nails. Six per shingle under Florida’s high-wind pattern, which is more than the four used elsewhere.
  • Ventilation. Ridge vent, off-ridge vents or replacement of existing vents.

A Worked Example

A roof measures 24 squares of surface. Add 12 percent waste for a moderately complex hip roof: about 27 squares to order. At three bundles per square, that is about 81 bundles of field shingle, plus starter, cap, underlayment, flashing and ventilation as separate lines. If an estimate shows a very different bundle count for the same roof, ask why.

Why This Matters

Material is one of the larger lines on a roof estimate. An estimate that lists squares, waste factor and bundles per square is transparent. One that lists only a lump sum is not. Sunny Roofing’s written estimates itemize materials by product.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many squares is a 2,000-square-foot house?

It depends on pitch, overhangs and how many stories. A single-story 2,000-square-foot home commonly measures in the mid-20s of squares; a two-story home with the same living area measures less.

Why does the estimate order more shingles than my roof measures?

Waste at cuts, hips, valleys and rakes. The waste factor is normal; ask for the percentage used.

Can leftover bundles be returned?

Unopened bundles often can, depending on the supplier. Keeping one bundle for future repairs is a good idea since colors change.
